La enfermería se ha considerado como una profesión entregada al cuidado del individuo, la comunidad y la población. Desde sus inicios, siempre se ha caracterizado por su bondad, amor y entrega; sin embargo, durante el crecimiento de la disciplina se han desarrollado diversos estereotipos que suponen una barrera en la comunicación enfermera-paciente, que además afecta directamente la imagen profesional y de cierta manera ridiculiza a los profesionales que luchan por posicionar la disciplina. Estos estereotipos tienen diversos responsables como la industria cinematográfica con la imagen que crea de los enfermeros y la sociedad, así como la perspectiva que tiene de la enfermería. Empero, esta barrera crea una oportunidad de cambio para que las escuelas de formación empoderen a sus estudiantes para que luchen por posicionar la profesión y creen conciencia de la importancia de la imagen profesional.

Nursing has been considered as a profession dedicated to the care of the individual, the community and the population. The image of nurses is usually associated with kindness, love and dedication; however, the true role of the nurse and its role in society is unknown. During the growth of the discipline, stereotypes have arisen that create a barrier in nurse-patient communication and that also directly affect the professional image and in a certain way ridicule the professionals who truggle to position the discipline. The film industry and the media have played an important role in the perpetuation of these stereotypes, with the image that show of nurses, and society, with the perspective it has of Nursing. This barrier creates an opportunity for change, for training schools to empower their students to fight to position the profession and raise awareness of the importance of professional image.
